I started my career in journalism in high school and later graduted cum laude from the University of Florida School of Journalism and Communications with academic credentials that certified I was ready to be a reporter as well as a few other things for which I had developed the skills, such as copy editor and publication designer — I’m even a competemt photographer. I’ve never worked full time for a newspaper or magazine but I have a multi-page bibliography of published work. For several years I covered the religion beat for my hometown newspaper and for another few years I wrote a food column for a regional magazine. I’ve produced published several newsletters over the course of a 30-year career. And the last career contribution I made to journalism was to train future reporters in reporting, news writing and feature writing.
I hope that establishes that I have some clue when it comes to reporting and covering a beat.
I have been an adoptee for 50-something years. News coverage of adoption is something that I feel qualified to adress. In successive blogs, I will talk about how adoption and news intersect and some of the results I have seen in print or broadcast. Comments are welcome but it remains to be seen how much time I will have to moderate them.
